On The Way

Living sustainably is very important for me; after all, it is the driving force behind this blog. However, overtime I've realized that it's not always easy to make sustainable choices, especially when there are so many tempting offers as distractions. That is why recently, I've been very pleased to see that more and more companies are trying their hand at eco-friendly offerings - and the media is joining in to promote them, too. So, in honour of Earth Day, I thought I'd showcase some of the ones that I'm most excited about:

1. Juicy Couture recently introduced a collection of sustainable sunglasses that are partially made with plant-based plastic and also incorporate bamboo.

2. Zoe&Zac, the new eco-friendly line under the Payless Shoesource brand, includes footwear - made with materials like organic cotton, hemp and recycled rubber - as well as accessories and beauty products.

3. H&M launched their second eco-friendly collection, the Conscious Collection, just a little more than a week ago (and I already raved about it here).

4. WhoWhatWear showcased an array of eco-friendly fashions and all-natural beauty products this week.

5. Seventeen magazine put together a selection of 25 eco-friendly haircare, skincare and makeup products.

I love seeing that eco-friendly fashion and beauty are starting to build a good reputation, and I'm hoping to see these isolated efforts turn into a movement towards sustainability throughout the industry soon enough.

  2. It'll be especially great when green ideas are also affordable on the large scale, because then there'll really be a difference. I recently saw the Z&Z line and I really liked some of it. Here's to hoping it becomes very in to be sustainable.

  3. As someone who is just getting my feet wet with this whole sustainability thang--where would you say the best (or easiest) place is to start??? Or did you just jump right in?

  4. Lisa: I think the easiest way to start is to just find something that you're really passionate about (be it fashion, beauty, food or anything else for that matter) and try to find ways you can be more sustainable in that area of your life. With time, you might discover that it becomes sort of second nature, and you'll want to expand it to the other areas of your life.
Another way to do it, which is also the way I did it, is to read some books and articles about the environment (I was lucky enough to do this for one of my classes) and as you go along you might discover that certain aspects of these environmental issues (animal extinction, water crisis, food crisis, pollution, the list goes on) are things that you really care about and would like to get involved in.
I hope this answers your question, but if you would like to talk more about it, please feel free to e-mail me at summersmailbox@gmail.com - I'm still learning, but I'm always glad to share what I know with others :)
